FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) – The Alaska Department of Transportation will begin load posting a pair of bridges on the Richardson Highway as data suggests a mining venture’s trucking contractor has been exceeding stated weight limits.

A Thursday alert from the department says trucks will be weighed at Tok and Fox prior to crossing the highway’s flood control bridges at milepost 346, and unpermitted loads will be stopped if their weight exceeds 80 tons, or 160,000 pounds.

“We’re seeing traffic behavior that is not conforming to safe operation on the bridge, and the load posting is helping us enforce that behavior,” Alaska Department of Transportation Northern Region Public Information Officer John Perreault said Thursday.

Perreault said overweight trucks without special permitting must now either reroute or unload until their weight drops below the posted maximum for crossing the bridges.
